Expense Tracker With Budget, No Bank Login

An expense tracker with budget limits builds the numbers from what you scan, not from a bank feed. Portmoneo keeps both the ledger and the budgets in a local database on your Android phone, so a per-category, per-store or overall limit is measured against the expenses you actually logged—no bank credentials, no aggregator.

An expense tracker with budget limits logs what you spend from the receipts you scan and the entries you type, then measures that spending against limits you set. There are no bank credentials to hand over, no aggregator in the middle, and no account link to revoke. Portmoneo keeps the ledger and the budgets in a local database on your Android phone.

Why Shouldn’t an Expense Tracker Need Your Bank Login?

It shouldn’t, because tracking a business expense doesn’t need access to your account. You need the merchant, the date, the total, and the tax line—and all four sit on the receipt. A bank link widens what an app can reach; a receipt log keeps it narrow.

Most bank-connected expense apps work by asking a data aggregator to read your transactions, then matching those transactions to receipts. That model is convenient, and it also means a third party holds standing access to your account activity. It is also how most budget apps source their numbers. If you’d rather not grant that, the alternative is to build the same picture from the source document.

Free accounts get 5 receipt scans a day, 5 chat messages a day, 90-day history, CSV export, and one overall budget plus three category budgets and one store budget. Premium lifts scans to unlimited, chat to 50 messages a day, history to full, adds PDF/Excel plus tax report export, and removes the budget caps. The price lives in Google Play, not behind a “contact sales” button.

How Does Portmoneo Track Expenses Without a Bank Connection?

You give it the receipt, not the account. Capture uses the on-device document scanner, a gallery or file import (jpg, png, pdf, heic, webp), or the Android share sheet. Cloud AI then reads the merchant, date, total, currency, line items, and tax rates, and you review the result before it becomes part of your ledger.

  1. Capture the receipt with the on-device scanner, or import a file.
  2. Analyze it in the cloud—this step needs a network because extraction runs server-side.
  3. Review the extracted fields and fix anything the model read wrong.
  4. Save the expense to the local database. Optional sync can mirror it across devices when you’re online.

Manual entry covers the rest—cash purchases, a taxi with no printed slip, a receipt you never got. Manual expenses are typed straight into the local database and don’t use one of your daily scans.

A biometric app lock gates the app at launch, so opening your ledger on a shared phone still asks for your fingerprint or face first. That lock is separate from Google sign-in; it protects the screen, not the account.

How Do You Build a Budget From Receipts Instead of a Bank Feed?

Set a limit, and Portmoneo measures it against the expenses you already captured. A budget targets one category (groceries, fuel), one store, or everything overall. Progress comes from the receipts you scanned and the expenses you logged by hand, so the number on a budget is the same ledger you see everywhere else in the app.

Each budget carries its own period. The default is a calendar month, and you can switch it to a month that begins on a day you choose, a week, two weeks, a quarter, a year, or a rolling window of the last N days. The screen shows spent, left, and days remaining, and you can sort the list by name, amount, or how much of the limit is used.

Three constraints are worth naming. Progress only knows what you logged, so a cash purchase you skip stays invisible until you enter it. Budgets are stored on the device first, which is why they open offline; syncing them to a second phone needs a connection. And there is no bank feed behind the figure—if you want transactions to arrive on their own, that is the model Portmoneo deliberately skips.

What Does a Budget Include on Free and Premium?

Free covers the basics without a trial timer: one overall budget, three category budgets, and one store budget, across every period option. Premium removes the caps and adds the alerting and rollover that Free does not carry.

Budget capabilityFreePremium
Overall budget1Unlimited
Category budgets3Unlimited
Store budgets1Unlimited
Periods and cadencesAll (monthly, custom start, weekly, biweekly, quarterly, yearly, rolling window)All
Spending alerts—Yes
Custom alert thresholds—Up to 5 per budget (default 80% and 100%)
Rollover—Yes

The free meter is explicit: once you have three category budgets, the app reads “3 of 3 free budgets used” and points you at Premium rather than quietly hiding the limit. No credit card is needed to reach it.

Can Lumen Answer Questions About Your Budgets?

Yes. The Receipt Chat assistant, Lumen, reads the budgets on your account and answers the useful question—how much is left in the grocery budget, whether a category is over its limit, which budgets you have. It reports the limit, the spend for the period, and what remains.

The budgets themselves are set on the Budgets screen, where you pick the scope, the amount, and the period. Chat works from whatever you have already created, and it never touches a bank account because there is none to touch.

What Stays on Your Phone and What Goes to the Cloud?

The ledger is local-first: receipts and expenses live in a SQLite database on the device, and browsing plus manual entry work with no connection. Two things do leave the phone—the receipt image you submit for analysis, and any chat message you send. Both need the network, and both are handled by the cloud model. Parsed line-item entities can also be stored server-side when you enable sync, which is what lets a second device see the same expenses.

So “no bank login” is not the same as “nothing leaves your phone.” We say it plainly: there’s no end-to-end or zero-knowledge encryption here, because the server has to read a receipt to pull out its lines. What we don’t do is ask for your bank credentials or hold ongoing access to your accounts. Guests can use the app anonymously and later attach a Google account to move their data.

Is the No-Bank Model the Same as an Offline Tracker?

No, and the difference matters. A no-bank tracker avoids account connections; an offline tracker keeps working without a network. Portmoneo is partly both: the database is local, so history, manual entry, and the budgets screen survive a dead signal, but receipt analysis and chat run in the cloud and pause until you reconnect. If you need fully offline capture with no cloud step, that’s a different product.

Who Is a No-Bank Expense Tracker For?

Solo freelancers, contractors, and self-employed Android users who keep paper or PDF receipts and hand a spreadsheet to an accountant. It suits people who object to linking a bank on principle, or whose workplace or client rules forbid it. A budget that draws only on what you scanned fits the same person: it tracks the spending you chose to record, not the spending a bank saw.

It doesn’t suit multi-seat teams that need approval chains, or anyone who wants transactions to arrive automatically from a bank feed. Portmoneo does neither; you can read the trade-offs in our Expensify alternatives comparison. To see the shape of the spending a budget is built on, the expense analytics screen breaks it into category and merchant charts.

Digital records are widely accepted when they’re legible and complete. The IRS recordkeeping guidance and the SBA guide to managing your finances both start from a clear record of income and expenses. Portmoneo is not a filing service—confirm the specifics with your accountant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to connect a bank account?

No. There’s no bank-login feature to enable. You scan a receipt or type the expense.

Can I add expenses by hand?

Yes. Manual entries go into the same ledger and don’t consume a receipt scan. A budget counts them the same as a scanned receipt.

Can I set a budget without sharing bank access?

Yes. Set a limit on the Budgets screen for a category, a store, or everything overall, and the app measures it against the expenses on your device. Free covers one overall budget, three category budgets, and one store budget.

Where is my expense data stored?

In a local-first database on your Android phone. Receipt analysis and chat send data to the cloud when you use those features; optional sync stores parsed entities for multi-device access, and budgets sync the same way.

Can I export what I track?

Yes. CSV is available on Free; PDF and Excel exports, plus tax report export, are Premium. There’s no live connector to accounting software—you share a file.

Does it work on iPhone?

Not today. Portmoneo is Android only; iOS is a waitlist.
